Mobile alerting with tracking & escalation for Pingdom

SC_feature

 Why SIGNL4

Pingdom is a cloud-based website and performance monitor with easy to configure dashboards and user setup.  SIGNL4 ensures that all on duty members receive, acknowledge and resolve critical alerts, all from their smartphones. With persistent notifications and escalation chains there will never be a critical alert that goes unattended. SIGNL4 also offers ad-hoc collaboration between team members for each and every alert, so Subject Matter Experts can be looped in to help resolve issues.

 How it Works

SIGNL4 team email address establishes connection with Pingdom to enable mobile notification and alerting capabilities for operational and network teams.  Event data can also be sent via a JSON POST to the SIGNL4 webhook.

 Integration Capabilities

  • Forwards Pingdom incidents to SIGNL4 for mobile alerting
  • Uses SMTP email to connect to your SIGNL4 team
  • Webhook integration with customized JSON payload
  • Staff can acknowledge and take ownership for critical incidents that occur
  • Communicate within an alert to address a problem
  • Alerts are escalated in case of no response
  • On-call scheduling to alert the right people at the right time

 Scenarios

  • Website Monitoring
  • Server Up-time Monitoring
  • Performance Monitoring

HOW TO INTEGRATE

In our example we are using Pingdom to monitor the up-time of critical servers.  We are setting up a webhook to send alerts when the application servers website can be reached.

SIGNL4 is a mobile alert notification app for powerful alerting, alert management and mobile assignment of work items.  Get the app at https://www.signl4.com

Prerequisites

A SIGNL4 (https://www.signl4.com) account

A Pingdom (https://my.pingdom.com) account

webhook-750×723

First setup a webhook integration to connect Pingdom and SIGNL4. Under the Integrations menu item click on Integrations.

Click on Add Integration.

Populate the Name and SIGNL4 webhook URL.

Save Integration.

add_check-750×447

We are going to add a check for an application servers website URL. Under Experience Monitoring click on Up-time.

Add New.

assign_webhook_blurred

Populate the trigger with the desired Name, Check Interval and URL.

In the Connect Integrations section put a check mark in the webhook created in step 4.

Now whenever the URL is unreachable an alert will trigger within Pingdom and send the event data to SIGNL4 via a JSON Post.  Customized messages are available within the alert policy.  SIGNL4 will receive the parameters and separate it out in an easy to read format.

Alerts can be augments so that the appropriate color, icon and message is displayed within the mobile app. This is done in the Services & Systems section of the mobile app settings.

ALERT OPTIMIZATION
SIGNL4 can further increase the visibility of alerts through its Signals and Services section. Augmenting the color and icon of alerts will provide more relevant information at a glance without having to open the alert.
